The Process
- When I began in this field, I wish I had known how much of our job is to educate EVERYONE as to what creating equal access really means and looks like. AND that education job is never finished. Faculty...staff...students come and go. We always have a new audience.
- When I began in this field, I wish I had known students often do not have a clue how to verbalize what they need. It is important to ask questions and listen very carefully to really get to the issue.
- Holding students accountable and truly educating students on our office policies and practices is very important. Don't allow them to aimlessly sign agreements that include important information about the policies/ practices then hold them to it later. Have an interactive approach focusing on education of our office in higher ed. It may take some time to do this appropriately in the beginning but it surely cuts down on issues down the road. Students find it harder to say "I didn't know" when clearly we both know that they did.
