Self Care

• I wish I knew how important it is to take good care of myself and not personalize things too much.
• And, finally, when I began in this field, I wish I had known that as I get closer to the sunset of my career I should never let any job define who I am. It is only one part of my life. DS may steal my heart but my spirit reminds me that there is much more to me than what happens 8-5 (who am I kidding? How many of us get by with 8-5???). My task is to do my best each day... evaluate at the end of the day how it measured up on the "good, the bad, and the ugly" scale... Learn a lesson or two from that scale...AND then let go of it, knowing that God did not die and leave me in charge. Then I will return the next day committed to hopefully do a little better and touch lives in a positive way.
• That when you go home from the job feeling no longer "otherwise qualified", and your resources are "substantially limited" placing an "undue burden" on your sad self, don't give up and don't forget, more likely than not, the good work you do will "alter the fundamental nature of the course" of student's lives.
• When I began in this field, I wish I had known that sometimes at the end of the day I would not like myself because I did not do all that I wanted to do for a student; BUT I had done all I could for the student. It is not about doing what makes anyone happy, including me, (although it is wonderful when that happens); but rather it is about doing what is right... legally and morally (letter of the law and spirit of the law).
