Mention: Someone uses the @ symbol before your Twitter handle, causing you to be notified that you've been mentioned
Retweet: someone forwards your tweet to their followers, optionally with additional comment
Hashtag: A way of grouping tweets about a common subject together
Direct Message: a private message that can to all intents and purposes be unlimited in length
