Sign into SkyDrive for access to the Office web apps. This service comes with Office 2010 and if you have an existing account, you can access that account through Office 2013.
Office 365 focuses on integration between the web apps and a desktop version of Office.

Some versions of Office 365 do not have desktop versions.
Cost of "owning" Office is amortized over the life of your use.
Cost per month depends on whether you purchase the year up front or month by month; and which version of Office 365 you buy.
