About Sakai

Sakai began in 2004 as a community source software development project founded by Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Indiana University, MIT, Stanford, the uPortal Consortium, and the Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI).

The purpose of the project was to produce open source Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) software.

Today, Sakai is used by over 350 colleges, universities and schools in 35 countries, including more than one-third of the top 100 universities in the world.
